Lagkada — Gateway to the Wild North

A mountain village at the entrance to the great gorge of northern Chios

📍 North Chios

The far north of Chios is the island's wildest quarter — a landscape of bare limestone ridges, deep gorges, sparse scrub, and sea cliffs that drop directly into the Aegean. Lagkada village sits at the entrance to this territory, a small, compact settlement of stone houses at the head of the largest gorge on the island.

The gorge that begins below Lagkada is one of Chios's finest natural features: a steep-walled canyon cutting through the limestone plateau, home to birds of prey, wild herbs, and the sound of running water even in summer. It is hikeable with good shoes and enough water, and the views from the rim are extraordinary.

The road beyond Lagkada — rough in places — leads eventually to the coast at Giosonas beach, one of the island's most remote and beautiful. This drive through the northern wilderness is one of the great underrated experiences of Chios: a landscape completely different from the agricultural south or the resort east coast, belonging more to the Aegean of ancient times than the Greece of travel brochures.

What to Do

  • Walk the gorge below the village — allow 2 to 3 hours
  • Continue by car to Giosonas beach on the north coast
  • Look for raptors and migratory birds in the gorge walls
  • Visit Nagos beach nearby for swimming and taverna lunch
