Kardamyla — The Seafarers' Town

The proud capital of northern Chios, where the island's greatest shipping families were born

📍 North Chios

If the mastic villages of the south represent one face of Chios — agricultural, medieval, inward-looking — then Kardamyla represents the other entirely. This is a maritime town, outward-facing and proud, whose sons have sailed the world's seas for generations and whose shipping families helped build the modern Greek merchant navy.

Kardamyla divides into two parts: Ano Kardamyla — the upper village, traditional and slightly austere — and Kato Kardamyla on the waterfront, where the harbour, the tavernas, and the rhythm of the sea define daily life. The waterfront at Kato Kardamyla is one of the most pleasant on the island: low-key, unhurried, with fishing boats moored alongside small pleasure craft and excellent fresh seafood at the tavernas that face the harbour.

The landscape around Kardamyla is among the most beautiful in northern Chios — pine-covered hills descending to clear blue water, with the island of Oinousses (home of yet more famous Greek shipping families) visible offshore. The road north from Kardamyla toward Nagos and Giosonas passes through some of the island's finest coastal scenery.

What to Do

  • Eat fresh fish at the waterfront tavernas in Kato Kardamyla
  • Walk up to Ano Kardamyla for views over the bay
  • Drive north to Nagos beach (15km) — one of the island's best
  • Continue to Giosonas for the dramatic northern coast
  • Look for the Oinousses ferry for a day trip to the shipowners' island
