Most visitors to Chios drive straight through Thymiana on the way to Karfas beach without stopping. They are missing something. This is a proper Chian village — not especially picturesque, not medieval, not a famous sight — but a genuine, working agricultural community with a strong local identity and a particularly good reason to stop in June.
Thymiana is famous on Chios for its cherries. Every summer, when the orchards around the village ripen, a festival is held to celebrate the harvest — a genuinely local affair with music, food, and the kind of community gathering that has been happening on this island for centuries. The cherries of Thymiana are extraordinarily good: sweet, dark, and juicy in the way that only tree-ripened fruit can be.
The village square has a large plane tree that provides shade from morning to evening, and under it a traditional kafeneio that has been serving coffee, ouzo, and conversation since before living memory. Sit here for an hour and watch the village go by. This is the Chios that tourism rarely sees — and it is entirely worth your time.
When to Visit
June is the month for the cherry festival — check locally for exact dates as they vary year to year. Outside of festival time, Thymiana is worth a 30-minute stop on the way to or from Karfas beach. The kafeneio on the square is usually open from early morning.
