Kampos stands apart from most places on Chios because it is not defined by a single monument, but by an entire historic landscape. About six kilometers south of Chios Town, the area developed into a refined residential and agricultural district, where Genoese and local aristocratic families built mansions behind high walls of red Thymiana stone.
Those walls protected the citrus estates from weather and preserved the privacy of the households within. Wells, traditional irrigation systems, marble courtyards, decorated balconies, and painted interiors all contribute to a setting that feels cultivated rather than rustic. Kampos is best understood as a complete environment where architecture, agriculture, and social history still sit together.
