Elata — The Western Edge

The most westerly of the mastic villages, perched above the Aegean with views toward Turkey

📍 South Chios

Elata sits at the western edge of the mastic zone, a small, unhurried village above the west coast where the land tilts toward the Aegean and the light in the late afternoon turns everything amber. It is the least visited of the seven official Mastichochoria, which makes it perhaps the most honest.

The village has the same medieval bones as its more famous neighbours — the fortified core, the narrow lanes, the mastic trees pressing close on all sides — but without the tourist infrastructure. What you find instead is daily Chian village life: women on doorsteps, the smell of cooking through open windows, cats in every patch of sunlight.

From the upper part of the village the view is extraordinary — on clear days the Turkish coast is visible across the Chios Strait, only 7km away, as well as the southern stretches of the island reaching down to the volcanic beaches of Emporios. The proximity to Lithi beach (7km) makes Elata a good base for a quiet coastal visit.

Getting There

Elata is 30km southwest of Chios Town. Take the road toward Lithi and Vessa. The village has no tourist facilities but there is usually a kafeneio open on the square.
