Nea Moni — UNESCO Byzantine Monastery

An 11th-century Byzantine monastery of breathtaking beauty — a UNESCO World Heritage Site

📍 Central Chios

Eleven kilometers inland from Chios Town, perched in pine forest on the slopes of Mount Provatas, Nea Moni is one of the finest examples of Byzantine architecture and art in the entire world. Founded in 1042 by Emperor Constantine IX Monomachos, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990 — one of only three Byzantine monasteries in Greece to receive this recognition.

The katholikon — the main church — contains a cycle of mosaics that rank among the most significant surviving examples of middle Byzantine art. The 11th-century mosaics depicting scenes from the life of Christ and individual saints are extraordinary in their quality, their color preservation, and their emotional depth. Earthquakes and Ottoman destruction have damaged much of the monastery over the centuries, but the mosaics that survive are luminous.

In the ossuary beside the church, the bones of victims of the 1822 Chios Massacre are kept in glass cases — a somber memorial to one of the darkest chapters of the Greek struggle for independence. The monastery was torched by Ottoman forces during the massacre, and many of the monks were killed.

Today Nea Moni is maintained by a small community of nuns who welcome visitors. The complex includes the main church, a refectory, a cistern, and a small museum. Dress respectfully — the nuns provide covering garments if needed. Open daily 8AM-1PM and 4PM-7PM in summer.
